Equ-Us Presented at The Movement Symposium

Equ-Us team - Yvette Marrier d'Unienville, Simon Marrier d'Unienville, Kris Robins

8 May 2019, California: April 29th was a momentous day for Horses 4 Hope, with founder and Monty Roberts Certified Instructor, Simon Marrier d’Unienville, co-presenting our Equ-Us™ equine-assisted addictions recovery program at Monty Roberts’ annual symposium The Movement 2019, held at Flag Is Up Farms, Solvang, California.

Presented by co-founder Kris Robins, Monty Roberts’ Horse Sense & Healing program developer, as part of her presentation titled “The Doctor is In – When Horses Move from Therapeutic to Therapist”, the talk focused on how horses have the capacity to assist-humans with “self-soothing” – a technique important in recovery from a number of conditions including drug and alcohol dependency, and post traumatic stress injury, among others.

Drawing from a study by the HeartMath Institute, Kris illustrated how horses have the ability to lead horse-human synchronicity by up to 30 seconds, and can cause VLF (very low frequency) heart rates within minutes of a human simply standing with, and touching, a horse. VLF is an intrinsic heart rhythm that is fundamental to health & well-being.  And Kris went on to say, “If the horses really are influencing heart rate & well-being, then perhaps they are providing a form of therapy that we do not fully understand … and they are doing it without formalized training … or prescribing medication!”

And included in the presentation were examples of how horses are being effectively used in conjunction with therapy programs, including Horses 4 Hope’s Equ-Us program, piloted in Johannesburg in Jan/Feb 2019 in partnership with SANCA – the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.

Equ-Us is the world’s first program to combine Monty Roberts’ horsemanship with Motivational Interviewing (Dr William Miller and Stephen Rollnick’s globally acclaimed counselling method that helps people resolve ambivalent feelings and insecurities to find the internal motivation they need to change their behaviour).

Equ-Us uses the combination of these two closely paralleled techniques, and the healing power of horses, to help those currently seeking help in an addiction recovery program. You can learn more about Equ-Us here.

With both Dr William Miller and Mr Monty Roberts present at The Movement 2019, it was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And Horses 4 Hope would like to extend a huge thank you to Kris Robins, Debbie Loucks, Mr and Mrs Roberts, Dr Miller and Kathy Jackson for their guidance.
